Captain Jim

I got the sailing bug while in college in Boston from a newspaper article about a young couple who bought a distressed sailboat and were going to sail it to the Bahamas, and all the exotic places they planned to visit. It sounded like a wonderful life.

I bought my first 38′ Morgan sailboat in ’77 and sailed to Florda and the Bahamas in ’78.

I became a professional Captain with a 100 ton USCG Masters license in 1982 while in St. Thomas so I could take out guests on my (by that time) 50′ Gulfstar ketch “Desperado”.

In 1986 I sold my boat and moved to land. I regretted it almost immediately. Life changed again for me when I met Lisa. I was living in the Northeast building houses and I was bored and tired of the weather. Lisa wanted to live where there were palm trees and she had cooking experience. I showed her my photo album of the sunny Virgin Island palm tree lined beachese during a New England blizzard. It didn’t take long to come up with a plan. We would buy a boat and charter again someplace with palm trees… the Virgin Islands!

We were married in ’89, the same year we bought a beautiful 52′ Ron Holland design sloop and named her “Renegade”. After a year in Florida and the Bahamas, we sailed to the Virgin Islands and began chartering. Since then, we have owned and chartered a 60′ Nautical Sailboat “Southern Comfort”, an 80′ Hatteras Motor Yacht “Obsession”, an 80′ Azimut Motor Yacht “Runaway”, a 62′ Lagoon Sailing Catamaran “Eclipse”, and now “Remedy” a 58′ Fountaine Pajot Sailing Catamaran.

Chef Lisa

Being from the same hometown in New Hampshire, I was definitely over the New England weather and tired of my busy schedule with a 9 to 5 job during the week and my catering service on the weekends. My father was a Chef, so I spent lots of time growning up in the kitchen with him. I enjoy cooking much more than bookeeping!

I met Captain Jim at a wedding reception I was catering for mutual friends. We hit it off right away! After dating for a few months he told me he was thinking about going back to the Virgin Islands. He had shown me pictures and told me stories of his adventures while chartering. The more we talked, the more I was ready to head south together. We were married within a year!

We found a few boats that he thought would be good for chartering and we took a trip to Florida to “look” at them. A week later we owned a stunning Ron Holland 52 cutter rigged sloop “Renegade”.

After returning to New Hampshire to take care of details, putting all our belongings in storage and quitting my job, we headed for sunny Florida in Jim’s pickup truck, shedding our winter clothes into rest area dumpsters along the way. We weren’t going back to the cold again!

We sailed Renegade to the Bahamas for a fantastic 6 week honeymoon that we never got in New Hampshire. Returning to Fort Lauderdale to finish the prep for chartering and the sail east out to I-65 (the sixty-fifth parallel), then straight south to St. Thomas. We arrived in St. Thomas during a charter boat show and although we were tired and not really ready, we met some brokers Jim had known before. We started chartering 2 weeks later. I’ve now been a professional chef on charter yachts in the Islands for over 30 years, on hundreds of charters, serving thousands of guests.

Life aboard has been anything but boring and I would not change it for the world!!

First Mate Daisy

Although being born in Texas, I was adopted in Colorado by a loving couple who never had any children. Needless to say, I get all the love they would have given a child. I love being anywhere my family is, although I’m not fond of flying! I have crossed the country in an RV, boated in the Gulf of Mexico, and sailed from Florida, through the Bahamas to St. Thomas.

I sleep a lot and play with my toys. I like meeting kind new people, although I love my catnaps the most

Reviews

A passionate Capt. & Mate = unforgettable experience
We sailed the USVI & BVI for eight (8) days w/Capt. Jim & Lisa Dec 27-Jan 3, 2025. Our fam of 5 (my wf & I + 3 kids age 26,22,17) wanted to do something ‘different’ over the Christmas/NY holiday…so did our first sailing vacay! Capt. Jim knew everything there is to know about sailing and the Virgin Islands. His life stories & grand tales alone made the trip. His love of the sea and his accommodating First Mate / Wife / Chef…made for fine dining on the sea too. We loved them & the trip!

Love the new boat!
Sorry for the delay in posting the review - things got a little hectic with all the new snow when we got home. LOVE the new boat - as usual - the weather was mostly fantastic and we really appreciated all the new toys, the new paddle boards were fun to learn on. But one of the things that everyone talks about still was all the great food. After snorkeling, paddle boards, and the time at Foxy's we come back with appetites & all of Lisa's culinary skills never cease to amaze us. New meal surprises and always some of our old favorites. I can't say enough how much we appreciate the attention to details - one of my favorites is always how well the food is paired with the wines and Island drinks you provide.
I highly recommend anyone who wants to travel comfortably, and well, to try the new boat. It is always a pleasure to travel with Captain Jim and Lisa who take such good care of their guests and always welcome us as family.

Most relaxing vacation you will ever take!!
This was our 5th trip with Captain Jim and his lovely wife Lisa. Our first 4 trips were on their previous boat. We loved it but their new boat is even more spectacular!! We highly recommend chartering with them. Captain Jim’s knowledge of the area and of boating is excellent. Lisa’s meals are better than any restaurant in the islands. Everything she serves is fabulous. Everyone is always sad when our trip comes to an end. We will definitely book trip #6 with them. Do yourself a favor and book this trip of a lifetime.

Awesome sailing adventure
The Captain and Crew are amazing and treat you like old friends from the moment you arrive. The food was like a 5-star restaurant. We have chartered in the BVI for 10 years and this boat was spectacular with large cabins and endless amounts of room to relax.
I highly recommend Jim and Lisa they will not disappoint !

What great memories we have of our trip!
The unique experience of sailing the British Virgin Islands is truly magical. Everywhere you look postcard perfect views enchant you. Islands sprinkled along the Caribbean blue water provide play spaces to explore, reefs to snorkel, and calm coves for evening mooring. Captain Jim’s knowledge of the waters and islands is extraordinary and a great comfort to any catamaran first timers. All options for the day’s sailing and excursions are offered to you by Captain Jim and Lisa. The boat is well equipped with many toys like tubing, paddle boards, and snorkels for all sorts of water fun. Plus, the ocean water is so warm and inviting. The sailing enables every day to be different like a travelling resort. Each room on board the catamaran is designed to meet all your needs and since you are on a boat, the together time simply happens in an unexpected precious way. Perhaps, it’s the superb gourmet meals that enhance the entire together time when gathered around the table. Chef Lisa, Jim’s dear wife, has a culinary gift. Lisa adds the little presentation touches to each plate served and every meal was very tasty. Our adult kids especially enjoyed the element of surprise as to what Chef Lisa was preparing. Foodies will be excited by Lisa’s wizardry. In short, this vacation far exceeded our expectations in so many ways, and we can honestly say that Captain Jim and Chef Lisa ensured the experience was most remarkable.

Best Vacation Ever!
We had a wonderful week with Jim & Lisa. It was our best vacation ever!
Captain Jim & Chef Lisa were awesome hosts and welcomed us into their beautiful home afloat.
Captain Jim was personable, and he has a wealth of knowledge of the islands. His expert boat handling skills provided us with peace of mind while aboard.
Chef Lisa has unbelievable skills in the galley. Every meal was like dining in a five-star restaurant. Her friendly and bubbly personality made us feel at home.
What a beautiful vessel with all the bells and whistles and creature comforts of a high-end resort.
We can’t wait to come back to sail again in the beautiful Virgin Islands.
